Riverview, Florida, an unincorporated area of Hillsborough County, lies along the shores of the Alafia River. This lovely waterway derived its name from a Native American word for “River of Fire,” so called because of the unique reddish-brown color of algae in the water. Once made up of the communities of Peru, a phosphorus mining area, and Riverview, the latter eventually overtook Peru and literally swallowed it. That is because Riverview was closer to Tampa and did not require crossing the river to reach it. Riverview’s proximity to southern Tampa is one of the factors in its continued growth today. The Hillsborough Regional Transit Authority provides express route #24X to connect Riverview to MacDill AFB. Commuters driving from Riverview to Tampa follow the US-301 North to the Interstate 75 and on to the Selmon Expressway and downtown Tampa.
